Contractor CH2M HILL Plateau Remediation Company is testing a system at a mock-up site in Texas that will isolate and stabilize about 15,000 pounds of radioactive debris in the K West Reactor fuel storage basin to allow for safe removal when the basin is dewatered and demolished. The work follows the removal and transfer of radioactive sludge from the basin to interim safe storage at T Plant last year and is part of ongoing efforts to reduce risk to the nearby Columbia River. Mock-ups are used extensively at Hanford to allow workers to train and test equipment before performing work in a radiological environment.
